ALWAN'S INTERN & VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Alwan accepts interns and volunteers year-round to support marketing, event management, fundraising, programming, and more. Alwan provides an exceptional opportunity to get hands-on experience about arts and  culture programming and learning the inner-workings of a non-profits organization. It is a great opportunity to grow professionally, intellectually and artistically. Alwan's interns are evaluated according to university/college requirements and receive accreditation.

Detailed Intern Job Descriptions

VOLUNTEER TEACHER’S ASSISTANT

Learning Objectives:

Acquire knowledge in the execution and planning of Alwan’s Arabic Language and Cultural class curriculum. Assist in the successful implementation of the Fall/Winter schedule. Build on communication and organizational skills through the effective logistical and administrative planning in coordination with Alwan’s Teachers.    

 

Responsibilities and experience gained: 

• Assist in the outreach and promotion of the upcoming class schedule 

• Provide administrative and logistical support of the Fall/Winter Class program

• Provide support in the preparation of class materials

 

Required skills: 

• Strong knowledge of social media outlets and Microsoft Office

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Keen attention to detail

• Highly organized and have the ability to meet deadlines. 

 

INTERNSHIPS

Positions are offered as both Full-Time and Part-Time with the minimum number of hours set at 15 per week for Part Time roles. 

MUSIC INTERN

Learning Objectives:

Obtain comprehensive knowledge of the programming of the Alwan Music Series and develop exceptional communication skills through resourceful outreach strategies. Acquire experience in program and event scheduling as well as development in online migration and archiving of previous Alwan events media.

 

Responsibilities and experience gained: 

• Assist in outreach/marketing of concert series, developing relationships with interested groups in the greater NYC area.

• Continue to build on the systematic archive of Alwan’s concert series and events to date using existing relevant footage and photos compiled on Alwan’s databases. 

• Gather and edit text for concert promotion – biographies of performing artists, and specific programming descriptions.

• Assist in the planning and execution of Music events – must attend all music events hosted at Alwan.

 

Requirements:

• Educational background in Music

• Strong communication skills and research experience

• Excellent knowledge of social media platforms

• Ability to work on both Mac and PC and Microsoft Office programs.

 

FILM INTERN

Learning Objectives:

Obtain comprehensive knowledge of the programming of the Alwan Film & New Media Series and develop exceptional communication skills through resourceful outreach strategies and cultivation. Gain experience in assisting and supporting curatorial development and construction of the monthly Alwan Film schedule as well as preparation for the Alwan Film Festival.

 

Responsibilities and experience gained: 

• Assist in the execution of Alwan’s monthly Film & New Media programming. 

• Gathering and editing text for artist work descriptions and biographies for film screenings

• Outreach and marketing of events and management of web presence.

• Provide support in the development and coordination of the Alwan Film Festival.

This role will involve the following duties: coordinating and collaborating with partnering organizations and contributing filmmakers to arrange an effective schedule of events; assist the Creative Director in sourcing and cultivating relationships with prospective filmmakers to contribute to the festival; gathering and editing work descriptions and biographies; compiling information on the filmmaker chosen for the mid-career retrospective component; assist in the effective marketing and outreach of the program; management of web presence. 

 

Requirements:

• Educational background in Film and New Media

• Well organized with attention to detail

• Strong communication skills and research experience

• Ability to work both independently and under structured supervision 

 

COMMUNICATIONS & DEVELOPMENT INTERN

Learning Objectives:

Obtain a thorough understanding of the implementation and promotion of all Alwan events, understand the processes of Alwan’s marketing and communications strategy and assist in building a more comprehensive outreach scheme. Gain knowledge in the technical administration and method of organizational databases and web design and migration. Acquire experience in the development of an effective and reliable volunteer program.

 

Responsibilities and experience gained: 

• Assist in the research and cultivation of new outreach and promotional strategies

• Provide technical support towards the development of a cohesive and comprehensive database and master contact archival system. 

• Provide support in the development of a more unified and systematic volunteer program

• General office duties as needed

 

Required skills: 

• Strong knowledge of social media outlets and Microsoft Office

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Keen attention to detail

• Highly organized and have the ability to meet deadlines. 



WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT INTERN

Learning Objectives:

Gain valuable practical experience and training in the development of Alwan’s new online platform.  Work under the supervision of a leading professional Web Manager to assist in the migration of data to a new WordPress content management system.


Responsibilities and experience gained: 

• Assist in the migration and organization of data from Alwan’s existing website to the new WordPress content management system.

• Provide technical support towards the coding and administration of the new website. 

• Work closely with the existing Web Manager to troubleshoot technical issues

• General office duties as needed

 

Required skills: 

• Background in Website Development/Technology 

• Experience in front-end and back-end web development

• Excellent aptitude with Microsoft office suite.

• Keen attention to detail

• Experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
