Sumayyah Samaha is an Arab-American artist working and living in Soho, New York. While she is primarily an abstract oil painter, she has recently done more works on paper, ceramic, installations, and mixed media. All her works address the Arab world, focusing on subjects like the Iraq war, attacks on the refugee camps in Jenin, the separation wall in Palestine, and the ongoing turmoil in Lebanon. Samaha has introduced words into her images, including the ancient poetry of al Ma'ari and the contemporary poetry of Etel Adnan, Suheir Hammad, and Mahmoud Darwish.
