Nishan Kazazian is an architect and an artist. Conceptually and skillfully, he moves back and forth between architecture and art. He can work toward either solely functional or solely expressive ends; theory and practice are inseparable in his praxis. Kazazian is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He has a Masters in Architecture from Columbia University and a Masters in Fine Arts and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. A former Fulbright Fellow, he has worked for major international architectural firms and is currently in private practice. He also teaches at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Kazazian's architectural work has been published in various magazines including Oculus, a publication of the New York Chapter of AIA. His artworks have been acquired by private and public collections and exhibited in galleries in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

While Nishan Kazazian's work appears to be abstract, it refers to a set of diametrical oppositions: the grid is submitted to an Abstract Expressionist syntax; flat surfaces give way to three-dimensional spaces; line and color converse; the grid is rearticulated both through pictorial lines and negative spaces; shadow likewise takes part in the gestural brushstrokes. Kazazian's primary concern is to start a discourse between the linearity of Mondrian and the coloration of Gorky, although the architectural element here also shifts the medium of painting toward a tectonic relief. Kazazian's artworks evoke the Greimasian square, through which binary oppositions are mapped to the social field. In a sense, just as the intrinsic relations of line and color are fully intertwined and ultimately inseparable, so are the relations of humans within the domains of gender, ethnicity, and politics.

This series is based on Kazazian’s concern with mapping both art and architecture to the structure of social meaning.
