Mike Estabrook is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. He uses drawing, animation, video, and painting as a means to embody a political imagination that can be both cute and grotesque. His work has been show at at ABC No Rio, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, The Queens Museum, The Bronx Museum, PPOW, Esso Gallery, and several other galleries and non-profit spaces in New York and abroad. In 2005-2006, he participated in the Artists in the Marketplace program at the Bronx Museum; 2007 at Elswhere Artists Collaborative residency in Greensboro, NC; and the LMCC Workspace program in 2007-2008. He Received his MFA from Queens College in 2005.
Artist statement:
"My work is political in as much as I am a political person, living in overtly politicized times. It is not politically neutral, as nothing is. It has a sick sense of humor because its topics are perverse. For the same reason, it is also grotesque and crude. It often makes use of well-known images, precisely because they are well known. These images are often portraits of power and its subjects, digested into the artwork, and transformed into fantasy. This work is not a tool of political conversion. I do not pretend that it will change the minds of those opposed to its politics. It is simply a mixture of whim and expression that does not ignore the world in which it is created."
