Salma Allam premiers at Alwan in Collection of Me, followed by an artist talk back exploring issues such as personal narrative in dance and her creative process.
Doors open at 7:30
Weaving together excerpts from four full-length dance theatre works, Collection of Me intertwines themes of love, death and personal identity. With her intrepid eye cast on her relation with others and herself, choreographer and dancer Salma Allam draws on her life experience to reveal personal narratives through text and dance. She stunningly blends the lines and vocabulary of modern dance with movement and gestures inspired by her Egyptian heritage.
The emotional immediacy of Allam's works is built through her intuitive creative process. She begins by composing texts, primarily through stream of consciousness writing. Allam then selects music, often drawn to the textures of Arab music that evoke her Egyptian heritage. The music serves as a fundamental guide to her choreography, driving the dance to life.
