ALCATRAZ

Sofia Koutsovitis - vocals Eric Kurimski - guitar Marcos Napa - cajón Hector Morales - drums Edward Pérez - bass, arrangements

ALCATRAZ offers a contemporary treatment of Afroperuvian classics, combining a firm basis in tradition with hints of American jazz. This repertoire of Peruvian jazz or New York festejo includes new arrangements of afroperuvian folkloric songs (such as “El Mayoral”, “Yo No Soy Jaqui” and “Cardo o Ceniza”) as well as original compositions.Alcatraz is directed by American born bassist, arranger, and composer Edward Perez. Perez has not only shared the stage with jazz heavyweights such as George Garzone and Mick Goodrick, but through his years in Lima he has performed and recorded with afroperuvian greats such as Julio “Chocolate” Algendones and Juan Medrano Cotito. In Jazzumadre he is joined by top-notch musicians including Marcos Napa, formerly the principal percussionist of the world renown ensemble Peru Negro. Drummer and multipercussionist Hector Morales completes the percusion section, jazzman Seth Trachy plays tenor sax, and on guitar is Eric Kurimski, protégé of the great Carlos Hayre. Lead vocals are provided by the city’s newest phenomenon in south american jazz, Sofia Koutsovitis.
