Alwan is pleased to host a lecture by renowned contemporary callligrapher Wissam Shawkat, on the eve of his US debut at Reed Space on February 24.
Shawkat infuses the tradition of Arabic calligraphy with the energy and aesthetics of contemporary Arab society that lies beyond the glittery material stereotypes of present-day Gulf emirates and sultanates. While maintaining the discipline of a master draftsman and certainly expert in "traditional" forms, Shawkat's work also evokes a certain street edge, reminiscent of irreverant graffiti art that emerged in the 1980's. Yet, it is instantly recognizable to connaisseurs of classic Arabic calligraphy. In his talk, Shawkat will showcase his work as an artist and designer and the practice of calligraphy from tradition to contemporary aspect, and discuss his concerns as an artist, the influences within his work, and the technical aspects of bringing his art together.
Born in Iraq, he received a degree of civil engineering from Basra University, Shawkat gained profound respect for the history of Arab art while at the same time acquiring the technical skills required for his profession.
Wissam Shawkat has received several awards for his work in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Iraq. He has exhibited at various venues in the UAE, including the Sharjah Bienniale, Qatar, Oman, Iraq, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Denmark. His first US show opens on February 24 at Reed Space.
