The Arab world has faced two military occupations in the 21st century: the Israeli in Gaza and the West Bank, and the American in Iraq. Such occupations produce resistance but also displacement, expropriation, denial of human dignity and sovereignty and a death toll for civilians. The Obama administration says it is committed to ending the Iraq occupation, and to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. What challenges will it face in doing so, and what would be the consequences of failure?
