Amer Hussein is young Iraqi painter, originally from Al-Hillah. He currently lives between Iraq and Jordan. Hussein works mixed media. His abstract paintings, which on occasion borrow elements from figurative art, are conversant with the overall trends of the contemporary Iraqi schools of painting, the most illustrious in the Arab world. His brush strokes are deliberate and decisive without sacrificing delicacy of expression. Whether in his use of color, light, depth, or shapes, Hussein's paintings not only express an internal psychic struggle that refuses the telos of resolution, but also combine the necessity of psychological despair with the imperative of hope in a dialectic of startling emotional resonance.
