To Gaida: Music from the Arab World
with Tareq Abboushi (Buzuq, Daf) Amir ElSaffar (Arabic Trumpet, Santoor) Mavrothis Kontanis (Oud) Zafer Tawil (Percussion)
And Guest Artist Arturo Martinez on Flamenco Guitar
The group will perform innovative arrangements of traditional and contemporary Arabic songs, in addition to Gaida's own original compositions. Gaida is one of the leading female vocalists on the New York Arabic music scene. It has been said that the singer/songwriter has the "most beautiful, expressive voice, the sort of voice that violins and clarinets try to imitate." Raised in Damascus, Gaida began singing at a young age, learning from the recordings of Sabah Fakhri, Um Kulthum, and Fairouz. With her passionate voice, innate sense of style and unique approach to Arabic singing, Gaida delivers a powerful and heart-moving performance.
