2008 marks the 60th year since the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe), when over 800,000 Palestinians were displaced from their lands to become what remains one of the world's largest refugee populations. 3rd i NY & Alwan for the Arts are starting off their 2008 collaborative series with two shorts that highlight the continuing effect of the occupation on the daily lives of Palestinians, followed by a third short documentary that looks at the effects of another occupation on a border town in Jordon.

A NUMBER ZERO / ALA SEFR Directed by Saed Andoni/ Palestine/ 2002/ 27 min/ BetaCam/ Arabic with English Subtitles

The filmmaker returns to his hometown of Bethlehem during the Israeli army's invasion of the city in April 2001. He goes to a barber to cut his hair and finds that the barbershop is a microcosm of the community, which comes to the shop in order to seek refuge from the warring world outside. The regular patrons strive for a measure of normalcy in their conversations and the enactment of their usual rhythms of life.

LIKE TWENTY IMPOSSIBLES Directed by Annemarie Jacir/ Palestine/ 2003/ 17 min/ 35 mm/ Arabic with English Subtitles

When a Palestinian film crew decides to avert a closed checkpoint by taking a remote side road, the political landscape unravels, and the passengers are slowly taken apart by the mundane brutality of military occupation.

A FEW CRUMBS FOR THE BIRDS / QUELQUES MIETTES POUR LES OISEAUX Directed by Annemarie Jacir & Nassim Amaouche France / Jordan / 28 mins / 35 mm / Arabic with English Subtitles

A documentary sketch of the lives of a handful of men and women eking out a living in the Jordanian town of Ruwayshed, a small-time oil-smuggling entrepot that's the last stop on the road to Iraq.

3rd I New York's monthly film and music salon designed by local filmmakers and experimental DJs showcases the works of independent filmmakers of South Asian descent and local djs, musicians and electronica artists. Providing alternative forums for South Asian filmmakers who often have few venues to showcase their work not only increases their visibility, but also provides a social forum for peers and audiences to participate in an ongoing discussion.
