News: Holiday Fundraising Drive
Mon, December 31, 2007 6:00 pm at Alwan for the Arts
Dear Friend,
Alwan for the Arts would like to thank you for your patronage this year and ask for your support as we enter our tenth year. Alwan is a unique, volunteer-run organization that fosters reflection, dialogue, and growth in the arts and cultures of the Middle and Near East, North Africa, and their Diasporas. Through music, film, book readings and exhibits, Alwan is pushing the boundaries of geography and conventional knowledge about Asian and Arab cultures. Please consider making a donation to Alwan this holiday season.
2007 brought much to celebrate. We received the prestigious Union Square Arts Award for innovative programs that help build community and promote social change. We hosted 80 music, film, literary, and cultural events, including a concert by the Oum Kalthum Orchestra from Egypt, providing the 20-person orchestra the first opportunity in seven years to perform in New York. And for the fourth year in a row, we partnered with 3rdi and the South Asian Women's Creative Collective to present the largest Arab and South Asian Film Festival in North America.
We look forward to sharing more exciting events with you in 2008, including a concert of classical Arabic music by the Joubran Trio from Palestine on February 22; a modern dance performance by San Francisco-based choreographer Leyya Tawil on March 1; our fifth Arab and South Asian Film Festival from March 7-16; and our 10th anniversary party in May!
For all of these events, our volunteers contribute their labor, so that overhead is a low 17% of our operating budget. With all of these savings, events still cost us an average of $35 a seat. We offer these events for free, or sometimes for a low ticket price of $10, in order to make these innovative programs widely accessible.
Your tax-deductible contribution will help keep Alwan's doors open to our friends, like you, who care about quality presentations of arts and culture. We look forward to welcoming you to Alwan in the new year.
Sincerely,
Ahmed Issawi
