Concert: IRAQI MAQAM MUSIC
Fri, February 20, 2004 9:00 pm at Alwan for the Arts
IRAQI MAQAM MUSIC
with
Amir ElSaffar & Friends
The Iraqi maqam is unique in the Arab music tradition. Iraq boasts several maqams (scales or modes) that are specific to it. The word "maqam" does not simply indicate a mode or scale, but a complex structure made of several parts. These set compositions are passed on through memorization, and performed with great attention to detail. The genius that each individual musician brings to these set maqams is in their articulation, interpretation and performance.
For several years, Amir an already established jazz and classical trumpet player has been traveling to the Middle East and Europe in search of Iraqi music masters with whom he studied the Iraqi maqam tradition.
