For one night only, Alwan for the Arts brings you the music of legendary Egyptian singer Oum Kulthum classics to CUNY's Proshansky Auditorium. Founded in 1967 by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, the main purpose of the Oum Kulthum Orchestra has been to adapt classical Arab music to the tastes of contemporary audiences without compromising the grace and spirit of its heritage. With 13 musicians (6 violinists, nay, oud and qanoun players, Cellist, percussionists and bass as well as 2 female lead vocalists and a conductor) the orchestra will present a 2 hour long program with one intermission that will include a wide of range favorite compositions by mohammed Abdelwahab, Riadh Sombati, Ahmed Zakariyya and others.
The orchestra presents its concerts regularly on the stages of opera houses and concert halls in Egypt and all over the world as well as in many arts festivals such as Jarash festival in Jordan, Mahrajan Al-Madina and Carthage festivals in Tunisia, Babel festival in Iraq, Zanzibar festival, and Andalusian music festival in Algeria.
Maestro Saleh Gobashi was born in 1945 and graduated from the Music Academy in Cairo. He played the violin in many orchestras and music ensembles, and in 1992 he became the principal conductor of the Om Kalthum Orchestra. He won many awards for his achievements, the latest of which is the Tunisian Arts Award.
