THE ALIYA CYCON PROJECT
Celebrating the release of their debut album, We Will Be Light, the Aliya Cycon Project is inspired by Arabic instruments, melodies, rhythms and culture, with musicians from 7 different continents. Cycon uses her highest reverence for the Arabic tradition to expose her own style in her compositions and performance, as well as to blend the elements of the musical cultures represented by her band members. Her music aims to salute the Arabic tradition, as well as to step just outside of its rich and colorful borders.

Through the music classes offered at Alwan For The Arts, Cycon embarked on what is now a successful early music career playing the 'oud and singing in Arabic. Presently, Cycon is in her third year at Berklee College of Music in Boston MA, majoring in Contemporary Writing & Production, and concentrating on the 'oud with Simon Shaheen. It was in the summer of 2014 that the Aliya Cycon Project was conceived with fellow Berklee College scholars and has steadily gained momentum since.
About Aliya Cycon
Aliya Cycon is a third generation Polish immigrant born in Greenfield, MA. After leaving her Massachusetts home to study ballet and music in New York City at 16 years old, she immersed herself in the vibrant musical community offered in NYC. After a life-changing opportunity to travel to Palestine with her father Dean Cycon, she decided dedicate her life to studying Arabic music, language and culture. She began her Arabic music studies with Zafer Tawil, Bassam Saba, and Amir el-Saffar.
Alwan's music program is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council.
