Khalil Joreige & Joana Hadjithomas, Lebanon, 2012, 90 min

At the height of the Cold War, a group of students at the Haigazian University in Beirut set up a rocket club with the ultimate aim of propelling a Lebanese satellite into space.

It made front page news. There was a commemorative postage stamp printed. It nearly provoked an international incident when one of the rockets made it as far across the Mediterranean as Cyprus. Yet little of this is remembered in Lebanon, less still in the wider world.

Tracing the Rocket Society’s leader, Manoug Manougian, to the US, the directors begin to piece together the rise and fall of the Society and attempt to explain why it has since faded from public consciousness.

Saturday September 20th, 5:10PM

Hany Abu-Assad, Palestine, 2013, 98 min

Omar, a young baker, is accustomed to dodging surveillance bullets to visit his secret love, Nadia. But Occupied Palestine knows neither love nor clear-cut war and Omar is suddenly transformed into a freedom fighter.

Suspicion and betrayal jeopardise his long-term friendships and soon his loyalties are as torn as the Palestinian landscape in this award-winning thriller/romance.

Monday September 22nd, 7:30PM

Jehane Noujaim, UK/Eygpt, 2013, 108 min

Three years on, the Egyptian Revolution continues to evolve. Two presidents have been deposed and the country finds itself back under military rule.

The Square takes us back to the heady days of Tahrir Square transporting the viewer deeply into the intense emotional drama and personal stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming their rights, struggling through multiple forces, in the fight to create a society of conscience.

About 3rd i NY

3rd I New York’s monthly film/video/media salon is designed by local filmmakers and cultural producers to showcase the works of independent media makers of South Asian, Central Asian, and Arab descent. Providing alternative forums for these filmmakers who often have few venues to showcase their work and whose cultures and histories are often demonized or misrepresented in mainstream media, not only increases their visibility, but also provides a social forum for peers and audiences to participate in an ongoing discussion.

3rdi NY Film Programming is made possible in part with public funds from the Fund for Creative Communities, supported by New York State Council on the Arts, and the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, both in partnership with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Alwan for the Arts hosts our monthly screenings series. We are thankful to the SINGH Foundation for acting as our fiscal sponsor.

Alwan's programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council of the Arts (NYSCA) and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council.
