Arabic Classes 2013 Fall Session and Intensive Course

Once again, Alwan will be offering Modern Standard Arabic and Levantine (colloquial) Arabic courses at our space on 16 Beaver Street.

Three new Arabic Classes will begin on Thursday, September 5 and Saturday, September 7, respectively, with one Intensive Levantine Arabic Class (Level I) being offered over the weekend of August 24th and 25th. The Fall Session classes consist of 12 sessions per course.

1. Modern Standard Arabic, Level I
Thursday Evenings, 6:30pm-8:20pm | Sept. 05 - Nov. 21, 2013

2. Levantine Arabic, Level I
Saturdays, 12:00pm-1:50pm | Sept. 07 - Nov. 23, 2013

3. Advanced Levantine Arabic
Saturdays, 2:00pm-3:50pm | Sept. 07 - Nov. 23, 2013

4. Intensive Levantine Weekend, Level I
Saturday-Sunday, 11:00am-5:30pm | Aug. 24 & Aug 25, 2013

Registration: Open until the first day of courses. Registration will not be confirmed until class fees are paid.

Fees: Checks and money orders (only) written to "ALWAN FOUNDATION", covering class fees and registration (as designated below for each course) are required prior to or, at the latest, on the first day of class.

Checks and money orders can be mailed to Alwan for the Arts. Please indicate the class you are registering and paying for on the check or money order.

 

DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

Modern Standard Arabic I

Thursday Evenings, 6:30pm-8:20pm Sept. 05- Nov. 21 2013
12 sessions

Class Tuition: $500 / Non-Refundable Registration Fee: $50

Course description: This elementary course in Modern Standard Arabic introduces students to the Arabic alphabet and focuses on basic reading, writing, listening, and pronunciation, plus certain expressions and greetings and other basic spoken skills.

Course material required: Textbook: Brustad, K. et al. Alif Baa, with Multimedia, Introduction to Arabic Letters and sounds, Third Edition.

Levantine Arabic, Level I

Saturdays, 12:00pm-1:50pm | Sept. 07 -Nov. 23, 2013
12 sessions

Class Tuition: $500 / Non-Refundable Registration Fee: $50

Course description: This class is an introduction to the conversational Levantine Arabic dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine. Students will learn how to communicate and to carry on a basic conversation in Levantine Arabic, and how to  introduce oneself, ask questions and manage a basic conversation. Students will also be introduced to the Levantine-Arabic culture and traditions through famous personalities, expressions, idioms, songs, cinema, books and food from this part of the Arab world.

Course material: Course material will be drawn from textbooks, handouts, and various audio/video resources.

Advanced Levantine Arabic

Saturdays, 2:00pm-3:50pm | Sept. 07-Nov. 23, 2013
12 sessions

Class Tuition: $500 / Non-Refundable Registration Fee: $50

Course description: This class is designed for students who have finished at least two levels of Levantine Colloquial Arabic or who have a previous experience in spoken Levantine Arabic. Students will practice advance conversation and dialogue, and will work on listening skills throughout various resources, including videos and DVDS. The course focuses on the dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon Palestine and Jordan.

Course material: Course material will be drawn from textbooks, handouts, and various audio/video resources.

Prerequisites: At least 2 levels of colloquial Levantine Arabic, or comparable exposure. Please contact the instructor for placement.
  

 

Intensive Levantine Weekend, Level I

Saturday-Sunday, 11:00am-5:30pm | Aug. 24-25, 2013

Intensive Weekend Tuition Fee: $600

Course description: Join this on-the-go course where you can practice and improve your Arabic spoken and listening skills and expand your vocabulary, using new verbs, nouns and greetings. This course also offers students the opportunity to  discuss topics related to the Middle East, its customs, culture, music and films.

Course material: Course material will be drawn from textbooks, handouts, and various audio/video resources.

All classes will supplement textbook material with reading from Arabic newspapers and will touch upon aspects of Arab arts and culture.

About the Arabic Language Program Coordinator and Instructor
Iman Maiki, Alwan for the Arts Arabic Language Program Coordinator and Arabic language instructor, has taught in her native Palestine, as well as in England and the US. In New York, Ms. Meiki has taught at Columbia University, New York University (NYU), New School University, Queens College and at Alwan for the Arts.

Please provide checks or money orders payable to ALWAN FOUNDATION for the full tuition before classes by mail to Alwan for the Arts, or on the first day of class, including a $50 non-refundable registration fee. If sending a check by mail, please refer to the class you are registering/paying for on the check or in a note with the check/money order. CASH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.


REFUNDS:
Please note that if you drop a course after the first class, you will be reimbursed tuition fees, minus the pro-rated cost of the first class.

No reimbursements will be made after attending the second class. Registration fees are non-refundable

LATE REGISTRATION:
If you register after the first class, you will still be required to pay the full tuition for the course.
